Using a deep medical understanding of the various causes of abdominal pain, different Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) products target different types of pain. So, which Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is right for you? Read on to find out.

How Does Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) work?

Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is an antispasmodic, or an anti-cramping medication. Antispasmodics help stop muscle spasms and over-contractions (commonly known as cramps). Cramps happen because too much neurotransmitters, or chemicals released by nerve cells, attach to receptors in the stomach muscles, making them contract too heavily1. But Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) blocks these receptors2. Without receiving the chemicals that “tell” the muscles to contract, your belly won’t get all tied up in knots!

The active ingredient in Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is a compound called Hyoscine N-butylbromide. This comes from a plant called Duboisia, originally found in Australia3. This plant-derived compound was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and has been used for decades to treat various forms of abdominal pain4.

What Are the Advantages of Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®)?

Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is fast and heads straight for the target: the root cause of the pain in your stomach muscles.

Unlike other simple painkillers, Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) acts locally and starts working within minutes. The active ingredient in Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®), hyoscine butylbromide, targets key receptors on smooth muscle cells in the gastrointestinal tract. By acting on the gut wall, it relaxes the smooth muscles of the belly, reducing painful contractions2 and untangling that painful knot in your stomach.

Many people take painkillers for some forms of abdominal pain. However, unlike painkillers, which cut the pain signals in the brain and do not solve the pain itself, antispasmodics like Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) target painful cramps at the source by relaxing the stomach muscles2.

Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is also gentler on the stomach, as it is barely absorbed into the bloodstream2. Some painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen may have gastrointestinal side effects9, but Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is soft on the tummy and hard on pain.

What Are Side Effects of Taking Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®)?

Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) is very well tolerated because the drug doesn’t cross the blood-brain barrier and doesn’t reach the central nervous system2. So, it is less likely to cause serious side effects than other drugs10.

Most people who take Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan®) experience no side effects6. However, rarely you may experience6:
